Inspiration- a surf with Barney Miller

Life can get in the fast lane really easy, and the simplest things taken for granted.
On Friday, members of the Rip Curl Pro water patrol were asked to go for a surf with Barney Miller.

Barney has goals to surf many spots around the world during his life, and he won't let ANYTHING stop him from achieving his goals. Last December he surfed Sunset Beach, Hawaii, and now Bells Beach presented a new challenge of wearing a 4/3 steamer wetsuit in the cool waters. Barney is also a quadriplegic.
2x World Surfing Champion Mick Fanning took a few hours out of his busy schedule to push Barney into some long rides along the shallow Bells reef. Turns out Mick and Barney are mates and have surfed at different locations around the world.
While Barney relies heavily on his fantastic equipment- a co-designed Darren Handley Surfboard and customised Rip Curl wetsuit and Personal Flotation Device.

However, his mental strength and determination is truly inspiring- floating up from wipeouts at the end of each ride- not being able to swim- with a huge smile across his face. Barney had just ticked the box of surfing another one of his dream waves.
As I stood in the shallows with the sharp reef scratching my feet and a small shore-break wave crashing through my fingertips, I imagined what it would be like to never feel that again. Don't take anything for granted, make the most of what we have been given.

TakeOff web contest- How do you have your protein?

We love our protein!
And we happen to believe this Coconut protein shake is the best way we've ever had it!!!

To make: Carefully chop the top off a delicious drinking coconut, pour the coconut water into a shaker, add TakeOff protein, shake and enjoy!

Coconut water is extremely nutritious and is a natural isotonic beverage- it has more potassium, less salt, and less sugar (and its natural sugar) than most Sports Drinks. And its 99% fat free!

We'd like to see how you have your protein...
Send in an image of your protein ingredients (and your recipe) and we'll pick our favourites who will receive a free bag of TakeOff!

Get creative!

Dan Ross ripping in Round 1 of the Rip Curl Pro!

In Heat 7 of Round 1 at the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, Rossy took on current World #1 Taj Burrow and Brazilian veteran Neco Padaratz.

Dan scored the highest individual wave score with a 7.77, however he was unable to find a high scoring second wave in the difficult conditions.

At the final siren, Rossy finished in second place with a total score of 13.27, less than one point behind Taj in first place. Dan's score was more than enough to win many of the other Round 1 heats.

Dan will now compete in Heat 12 of Round 2 when competition (hopefully) resumes tomorrow with an expected increase in swell.

Catch all the live action at Bells Beach or watch it on the webcast at live.ripcurl.com.
